Incidentally, the inadequacy of thelaw to secure justice for the wronged is shown,and the lawyer in the play has some affinitywith the legal luminaries in M. Brieuxs LaRobe Rouge. But Strindbergs judge is arighteous man who chafes under the limita-tions and responsibilities of his profession. Those, whose knowledge of Strindbergswritings is limited to his naturalistic plays,have judged his powers as a literary artistfrom an entirely inadequate point of view.When Justin McCarthy spoke of the realStrindberg, as revealed in The Father, LadyJulie and Comrades, he ignored, not only thevolumes of essays, stories and novels whichpreceded the plays mentioned, but those whichwere published at the same time.
