Description

Défenseur de la laïcité, député du Rhône et ministre de la IIIe République, mort à 43 ans. Il a traduit en français en 1885 l'œuvre majeure d'Arthur Schopenhauer, Le Monde comme Volonté et comme Représentation. Cette traduction, saluée par Friedrich Nietzsche, fit référence aux xixe et xxe siècles.

Burdeau a un monument et une rue à Lyon, en bas des pentes de la Croix-Rousse, au pied de l'amphithéâtre des Trois-Gaules, mais la statue en pied a disparu, sans doute fondue en même temps que celle du Sergent Blandan.
