Summary

[edit]
Description Auditorium Building, Roosevelt University in Chicago (1889), a national landmark. It was commissioned by Ferdinand Peck to be the largest and most luxurious theater in the country. Peck was able to convince many influential Chicagoans to contribute to its construction, including Marshall Field, Martin Ryerson, and George Pullman. The theater included the first central air conditioning system, and was the first to be lit entirely with light bulbs. President Grover Cleveland laid the cornerstone in 1887. A year later, the 1888 Republican National Convention was held in the partially-completed building. On December 9, 1889, President Benjamin Harrison returned to dedicate the building. Adler & Sullivan designed the building and operated out of the top floor upon its completion. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra made its first performance here in 1891 and continued to perform here until Orchestra Hall was built in 1904. Theodore Roosevelt held a convention for his independent National Progressive Party here in 1912, where he was nominated for President (the "bull moose" party). Opera functions ended in 1929 when the Civic Opera House was built. Only a few years later, amidst the Great Depression, the theater was closed. In 1946, Roosevelt University moved into the building. The theater was re-opened in 1967.
