Aubigné-Racan (Sarthe)

Site archéologique gallo-romain de Cherré (Ier au IIIe siècle).

Le théâtre.

Le théâtre se distingue de l'odeon. Le théâtre sert aux représentations dramatiques et aux pantomimes, l'odéon, plus petit, est consacré au spectacle lyrique et à la poésie.

Le théâtre pouvait contenir 3000 spectateurs. L'accès à la cavea* se faisait par trois vomitoires*principaux et quatre autres intermédiaires plus petits. Des escaliers en bois permettaient d'atteindre les parties hautes à plus de 12 mètres de hauteur.

Les premiers rangs des gradins étaient réservés aux personnalités, propriétaires, prètres, magistrats. Ensuite venaient, dans l'ordre, les artisans, militaires, citoyens libres, les ruraux, les esclaves. Les derniers rangs étaient souvent réservés aux femmes.

Le mur de scène (scaenae frons), long de 63 mètres, ferme l'hémicycle des gradins. Il supportait les décors.

La scène a été déplacée au milieu du IIe siècle et installée à l'intérieur de l'orchestra*

Le théâtre a probablement fonctionné du Ier au IVe siècle, si l'on en juge par les monnaies retrouvées sur place.


  • cavea : ensemble des gradins.
  • vomitoires (vomitorium): passages sous les gradins et alimentant ceux-ci. Ils permettaient d'éviter le contact entre les classes sociales.
  • orchestra : espace entre les gradins et la scène.
