(NO. 838.)JAMES ATWATER. ATWATER HISTORY. 135 838. James, son of Titus; m. July 17, 1851, Jane L., clau. of CheneyTaft and Lydia Kennedy, b. Dec. 26, 1827. He d. Dec. 19, 1903. He was born in Conesville, Schoharie county, N. Y., and obtained hisearliest education in the common schools of his native village and laterattended the Livingston academy. He graduated from the State Nor-mal school in Albany in 1844 and at once took up teaching as hisprofession. He went to Lockport, N. Y., soon after and was for seventeen yearsemployed as a teacher in the old Lockport Union school. During a periodof eleven years, during this time he was also the superintendent of pub-lic schools in that city. He was the teacher of mathematics in the Unionschool during his connection with it. He finally left teaching to engage in the insurance business and formany years, he was prominent among the business men, building up aprosperous business in his chosen line.
