Description |
Nederlands: Ifa-tikkers zijn gemaakt van ivoor of hout en soms van messing. De babalawo (Ifa-priester) tikt ermee op het orakelbord aan het begin van een sessie, om de aandacht en aanwezigheid van Eshu en andere krachten op te roepen. Het geluid van het tikken wordt versterkt door de uitholling op de achterkant van het bord en in dit geval nog eens extra door de bel met klepel.
De grote beeldhouwtraditie van Abeokuta is in het midden van de eeuw gevestigd vanuit Egbado door twee rivaliserende families, de Eshubiyi in de wijk Ibara en de Adugbologe in het stadsdeel Itoko. Kenmerkend voor de Eshubiyi-school zijn volgens W. Fagg (in Fagg en Pemberton, 1982: 37) de verfijnde uitbeelding van kapsel en kleding. Ook vindt men vaak verwijzingen naar Eshu, die een altaar heeft op het Eshubiyi-woonerf. Alleen al daarom maken de Adugbologe-snijders geen beelden voor Eshu. Abeokuta was niet alleen een belangrijk centrum van houtsnijders, maar ook voor de brons- en messinggieterij. Er waren zelfs twee scholen, de één gesticht vanuit oud Oyo, waarvan deze tikker wellicht een late vrucht is, en een andere die op de Ijebu school aansloot (Adepegba, 1991: 19). De Noord Yoruba of Oyo-traditie heeft een duidelijke uitdrukking gekregen in de wat barokke stijl van Obo Aiyegunle in Ekiti die ook weer invloed had op het werk uit Abeokuta. Beschrijving Tikker vervaardigd uit messing en bestaande uit een knielende antropomorfe vrouwfiguur met de handen aan de borsten en gezeten op een bel. |
