Deutsch: "Prinz Karl Christian Joseph Ignaz Eugen Franz Xaver war der fünfte Sohn Augusts III., Kurfürst von Sachsen und König von Polen, und Maria Josephas von Österreich. Unter seinen Geschwistern war auch die spätere bayerische Kurfürstin Maria Anna Sophie. Während des Siebenjährigen Krieges flüchtete er gemeinsam mit einem Großteil der kurfürstlich-königlichen Familie nach München, an den Hof seines Schwagers Maximilian III. Joseph von Bayern und seiner Schwester. In dieser Zeit sollte Georges Desmarées den Auftrag erhalten haben, den Prinzen zu porträtieren - und dies als Reflex auf die herrschenden Kriegszeiten im Harnisch und mit entschlossenem Gesichtsausdruck. 1758 ernannte ihn sein Vater zum Herzog von Kurland und Semgallen, in seinem Schloss Mitau sorgte er für eine glänzende Hofhaltung. 1763 dankte Karl als Herzog ab und kehrte nach Dresden zurück. Ein Bildnis (wohl) Prinz Karls befindet sich im Depot der Bayerischen Staatsgemäldesammlungen: "Bildnis eines sächsischen Prinzen" (Inv.-Nr. 3272). Ein dort ebenfalls aufbewahrtes, fälschlich als Bildnis "Herzog Clemens Franz de Paula von Bayern" eines deutschen Künstlers des 18. Jahrhunderts inventarisiertes Porträt (Inv.-Nr. 3277. Öl auf Lwd. 81,9 x 65,6 cm) ist kompositionell nahezu identisch mit dem vorliegenden Gemälde. Vgl. Hernmarck, Carl, Georg Desmarées. Studien über die Rokokomalerei in Schweden und Deutschland. Uppsala 1933, S. 192, WVZ-Nr. 68 (wohl das letztgenannte Gemälde, damals jedoch als Inv.-Nr. 6375 geführt. Öl auf Lwd. 82 x 65,5 cm). Bei Hernmarck ist die Identifizierung des Dargestellten als Prinz Karl von Sachsen und Polen noch mit einer gewissen Unsicherheit erfolgt. Eine Porträtserie von acht Angehörigen der bayerischen Kurfürstin Maria Anna Sophie wurde - als aus der Nachfolge des Georges Desmarées stammend - am 29. September 2008 bei Sothebys Amsterdam angeboten (Kat.-Nr. 16). Die Maße der Gemälde lagen bei je ca. 82 x 65,5 cm, die Rahmung entsprach in ihrer Ornamentik dem Rahmen des vorliegenden Porträts." |
