Over the teachers yellow skirt a white apronis draped, and the red gown of the punished pupil is set offby a neighboring bit of complementary green drapery. Thelight is distributed over the three figures of the teacher, herlittle sinner and the girl in blue, while the other three figuresare in effective partial shadow against a neutral, dark brownground. In 190i), June 3, Dr. W. R. Valeiitiner wrote of it: I should ))refer not togive an ojiinion respecting the picture wliich you have attributed to Velasquezuntil I return from Sjjain. But I think I might say that it seems to me to be avery excellent and interesting Sjianish jiicture of tlie period, which is very near tosome of the early works of Velasquez.
