Roxelane et Soliman le Magnifique huile sur toile 139,5 x 97 cm. (54 7/8 x 38 in.) ATTRIBUTED TO ANTON HICKEL, ROXELANA AND SULEIMAN THE MAGNIFICENT, OIL ON CANVAS Si le nom de Jean-Baptiste Le Prince (1734-1781) fut retenu dans un premier temps pour cet élégant portrait d’un couple turquisant, ainsi qu’indiqué sur le cartouche du cadre, l’existence d’une composition semblable, bien qu’inversée, signée et datée 1780 par le portraitiste autrichien Anton Hickel (1745-1798) nous conduit aujourd’hui à reconsidérer l’attribution du tableau. Le tableau de Hickel, actuellement conservé au Landesmuseum Mainz (no. inv. DL 1996/59), donne à voir Soliman le Magnifique (1494-1566) avec Roxelane (vers 1500-1558) jouant de la cithare. Cette jeune femme, née dans le Royaume de Pologne, intégra le harem du Sultan ottoman probablement après avoir été enlevée par les Tatars de Crimée. Elle y devint rapidement la favorite de Soliman le Magnifique, qui en fit par la suite son épouse légitime. Exposé dans le cadre de la rétrospective Im lichte des Halbmonds (Dresde, Kunstsammlungen – Bonn, Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, 20 août-12 novembre 1995 – 15 décembre 1995-17 mars 1996, n°359), l‘hypothèse avait été émise qu’il s’agit plutôt d’une représentation de la soprano allemande Maria Aloysia Antonia Weber Lange (vers 1760-1839), belle-sœur de Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), qui, comme Hickel, fréquentait la cour des Wittelsbach à Munich et Mannheim. Son costume pourrait faire allusion à son rôle de Zémire dans l’opéra-ballet turc Zémire et Azor d’André-Ernest-Modeste Grétry (1741-1813), dont la première à Mannheim eut lieu en 1780, date de réalisation du tableau. Cette proposition reste hypothétique, d’autant plus que le portrait était déjà identifié en 1790, dans le premier inventaire connu le mentionnant, comme de Roxelane et le Sultan (Dresde, Kunstsammlungen – Bonn, Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, Im lichte des Halbmonds, cat. exp., Leipzig, 1995, pp. 308-309). Il convient néanmoins de relever qu’une composition similaire à la nôtre – non inversée – et aux dimensions semblables est passée sur le marché en 1913, lors de la vente après-décès de la collection du marchand Eugène Kraemer (1852-1912) en reprenant l’attribution à Le Prince. La notice du catalogue proposait une autre identification du couple, ‘Le Prince de Ligne et la Princesse, née Hélène Manalka' (vente Eugène Kraemer, galerie Georges Petit, Paris, 28 et 29 avril 1913, lot 42). |
