Il Postinocene dell'1 Etna 15 quale, forse a causa della sua poca fluidità , si fermò ad una certa altezza senza effondersi in forma di corrente lavica. Lo stesso fenomeno dovette avverarsi a Motta S. Anastasia, nella quale ultima località il periodo esplosivo dovette essere di minore durata e intensità , come si rileva dalla scarsezza di la- pilli e dalla mancanza di bombe. Le rupi di Paterno e di Motta S. Anastasia sono dunque i residui alquanto smantellati di due piccoli vulcani e, benché isolati dalla gran nude dell'Etna, pure sono da ritenersi indub- biamente collegati al suo grande focolare vulcanico , come gli altri più recenti di M. Mojo, isolati all' estremo opposto , al di là dell' Alcantara. Tra Paterno ed Adernò, addossati ai terreni eo-miocenici che vanno a perdersi sotto alle lave dell' Etna, si trovano altri lembi di argille e di conglomerati postpliocenici, attraversati qua e là da formazioni basaltiche preetnee divise in prismi, le cui basi pentagonali od esagonali, spesso disposte orizzontalmente , ricordano in vari luoghi il selciato delle antiche vie romane. 2. â- Il Poggio di Cibali. A Nord-Ovest di Catania la formazione postpliocenica si ritrova di nuovo allo scoperto delle lave al Poggio di Cibali, elevato appena di 104 metri sul livello del mare e circondato dalla lava dell' anno 253.
