Description
Nederlands: In 1655 publiceerde Joan Blaeu (1598-1673) een atlas van China, samengesteld door de Italiaanse jezuiet Martino Martini (1614-1661). In deze atlas werden nauwkeurige kaarten van de vijftien Chinese gepresenteerd, waaronder deze kaart van Peking en omgeving. Peking was de residentie van de Chinese keizer en Blaeu heeft dat aspect ook in de kaart verwerkt. Aan weerszijden van de titelcartouche zijn de keizer en keizerin afgebeeld.
English: Appropriately, the sheet for Hopeh that takes in Peking is the most ornate of Martinis fifteen provincial maps. Blaeus designer has provided a delightful title-piece, formed of two Chinese elders seated in ornamental chairs, with their servants and a pair of flamboyant birds. Curiously, although Peking had been named since the 15th century (after a spell as Kublai Khans Camnalue), it is here spelled Xuntien.
