Description
English: Atlantic Telegraph Cable 1865. Chart Shewing the Track of the Steam Ship Great Eastern on Her Voyage from Valentia to Newfoundland with the Soundings - The Daily Latitude and Longitude. The Distance Run and the Number of Miles of Cable Paid Out
The transatlantic cable would be the world's longest underwater telegraph cable, extending a distance of over 2000 miles between Newfoundland and Ireland. The location of the cable, from Newfoundland to Ireland, was chosen because surveys revealed that the ocean floor was a plateau between those points. This chart shows the track of the 'Great Eastern' on her voyage from Valentia to Newfoundland.
