Description
English: This map, entitled "Topographical Map of ATLANTIC CO. NEW JERSEY, From Recent and Actual Surveys" (though it mostly doesn't show topography), made by F. W. Beers and printed and published by Beers, Comstock & Cline in 1872, shows Atlantic County, New Jersey, as it was then, including its division into municipalities (then Galloway, Egg Harbor City, Mullica, Hammonton, Hamilton, Buena Vista, Weymouth, and Egg Harbor Township), the names of its towns (and more detailed maps of some towns in insets, which also show property lines, parks, and graveyards), its roads (sometimes labeled; ones planned but not then existing are drawn in dotted lines), its houses and businesses labeled with their owners' names, and its coastline, islands, marshes, lakes, and rivers (usually labeled). Its scale is given as 200 rods (i.e. 3300 ft., .625 miles, or ~1006 meters) to one inch. Also included are population data from 1870 for Atlantic and Ocean Counties (divided by township and race) and for each US state and territory, the population of each county in New Jersey from each census from 1790 to 1870, a table of distances between locations, and lists of advertisements divided by town. The main map's depiction of Egg Harbor City's lakes and coastline is based on a plan which was never carried out beyond the municipality's western section and so is not precisely correct in the central and eastern sections; likewise, most of the dotted-lined streets in its central and eastern areas were never built. This image was found at http://www.westjerseyhistory.org/maps/countymaps/AtlanticAll1872lev3.jpg (archive); small parts of the parts of the map along which it was folded are missing.
