Description
English: Atherstone Locks No 4, Coventry Canal, Warwickshire. This is fourth lock in the flight of eleven lowering the water level by eighty feet (24.4 metres) over about two miles (three kilometres). Here the ground paddle has been fully raised, allowing water from the canal above the lock to enter and fill the lock chamber prior to a narrowboat entering. In order to help conserve water, side ponds were placed by each lock in this flight, as can be seen here. Some have been filled in, and the others are no longer actively used. As the canal company had run out of money by 1771 when it reached Atherstone on its course from Coventry, these locks and the rest of the route were constructed later, eventually arriving at Fazeley in 1790.
