"Portrait of a Lady as Venus"
Description
Français : "Notre portrait semble avoir perdu l’identité du modèle portraituré depuis plus d’un siècle, étant donné que dans la vente de 1907 on le présentait déjà comme « portrait de femme » anonyme. Connaissant la vie et l’œuvre de Pierre Gobert, l’hypothèse d’une origine princière est tout à fait envisageable. Ayant travaillé dans les années 1720 pour la cour de Lorraine, mais simultanément pour la cour de Versailles, l’artiste a également peint presque toute la progéniture du Régent, ainsi que des innombrables princesses des branches de Condé et Conti. Peintre à la mode et fort apprécié de son temps, il semble fort probable qu’une princesse de sang lui a commandé son effigie.
Notre œuvre par sa composition se rapproche fortement du portrait de Charlotte Aglaé, duchesse de Modène, fille du Régent, conservé au Musée de Kassel (Allemagne), inventaire SM 1.1.848" [1]

  • Vente Drouot, Paris, 13 mai 1907, comme Alexis Simon Belle « Portrait de femme en Hébé » (l’étiquette de la vente est toujours présente à l’arrière).
  • Acquis par Eugène Bretel (industriel normand), collection château de Chiffrevast (La Manche) jusqu'à 2006.
