y brought up the rear. Theprocession halted as Dr. Farnwright saw Deck. 240 AT THE FRONT How is my father, doctor? asked the major, when he came near enough to speak to the sur-geon. He is quite comfortable; but I fear his in-jury is something more than a mere scalp wound,so that it will take time for it to heal, thoughI do not regard it as at all dangerous, repliedDr. Farnwright. Can I speak to him ? Certainly; he is quite himself now. Butthe shock seems to leave him very weak. The bearers of the litter had placed their bur-den on the ground, and one of them told thecolonel Major Lyon had come to see him. Deckdismounted; and Ceph looked at the woundedcolonel as though he understood all about thecase, and sympathized with the sufferer. Theson kneeled at the side of his father, who reachedout his hand to him, with a faint smile playingon his lips. How do you feel, father? asked Deck, ashe took the extended hand; and he could hardlyrestrain a flood of tears that crowded up foran outflow.
Text Appearing After Image:
The Son kneeled at the Side of His Father l\ujt 1240 THE FINAL RETREAT OF THE ENEMY 241 I am comfortable, though my head gives meconsiderable pain, and I feel as weak as thoughI had been sick a week. The doctor says Ishall do very well; but it will take time forthe wound to heal, for it is in a dangerousplace. How goes the battle, Dexter? The battle is over, and the enemy are re-treating to the north, replied Deck. The gen-eral has ordered the command to Barkville withall possible haste, and the men are taking a restof a few hours before we start. At this moment Colonel Gordon and the staff-officer rode up to the spot. They spoke to thedoctor, who explained the condition of his pa-tient, and told them they must not talk to himabout the battle or the war, for the colonel wasexcitable on these topics. They went to thecouch, and the sufferer took the hand of each.He wanted to know more about the engagement. Major Lyon has told you about the victory.Colonel, and you must not talk about it
