Title |
asymmetrical buckle |

Description |
English: Incomplete cast copper alloy double loop asymmetrical shoe or knee buckle with a drilled frame for a separate spindle, now missing. The spindle would have held a pin and chape which are also now missing. There is iron corrosion product around the holes where the ends of the spindle remain, suggesting that the spindle would have been made of iron or steel. The frame is decorated with incised chevrons at the expanded midpoints of the rounded edge and the opposite straight edge of the frame. At either end of the spindle are expanded lobes with a pair of parallel transverse grooves which echo the width of the spindle beneath. At each corner of the frame are oblique grooves which define triangular and diamond shapes. The frame is 24.5 mm long, 24.5 mm wide and 3 mm thick at the spindle socket.
Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similar decorated asymmetrical buckle on page 97, No.596, which is dated from c.1660-1720. |
