Title |
asymmetrical buckle |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper alloy asymmetrical double-loop buckle frame with moulded decoration all over the frame. There are moulded crescents, linked like a chain, around the square end of the frame and a rosette at either end of the strap bar which is narrowed and recessed. The frame then expands outwards slightly to the curved outer edge with two moulded scrolls flanking a round knop with a moulded rosette. There are patches of red paint, rather than enamel, on the surface of the frame, which might have been used like lacquer to protect the buckle from corroding.
Whitehead (1996) illustrates similar buckles on page 93, Nos.594-595, which are dated from c.1575-1700. |
