Fundación Carlos Slim, Ciudad de México Transcripción de la ficha: "Los medallones o escudos de monja se difundieron en el Nuevo Mundo a partir de la tercera década del siglo XVII y fueron característicos de la vida conventual. Las religiosas solían portarlos en su profesión de fe y durante las ceremonias más importantes. Antes adornados con materiales preciosos, tras la reforma encabezada por el arzobispo Francisco Manso en 1635, se convirtieron en un objeto más simple y decoroso. El escudo servía de protección contra las tentaciones de la vida mundana y, como apuntó la académica Elizabeth Perry, era una exhibición pública de la mejor y más avanzada pintura en Nueva España. La coronación de la Inmaculada, símbolo de su elevación al trono por el Señor como Reina del Cielo, guiaba a las hermanas al destacar la virtud de pureza." (Símbolo y Reino, 2023) |
