Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Astwith Dumbles. This photograph shows Astwith Dumbles¹ and was taken from a gate by a 595625 in Astwith leading toward Hardstoft.

In front of the Astwith Dumbles is a Sewage Works and in the distance are the Hardwick New and Old Halls. The 'new' hall was built for the Countess of Shrewsbury (commonly known as 'Bess of Hardwick') between the years 1591 and 1597. The new hall was the inspiration for Chadwick Hall² in D.H. Lawrence's novel, Lady Chatterley's Lover.

¹ Dumbles is a local word meaning a small valley.

² The nearby Sutton Scarsdale Hall inspired Fritchley in Lawrence's book. See this photograph by Stephen G Taylor, 205739.
