Summary

[edit]
Description

In the Astor Place subway station, there's a bricked-up doorway with the words "Clinton Hall" above it. This is the old name for the 11-story building between 8th Street and Astor Place, facing the cube, also known as the Mercantile Library Building, built 1890. The previous building on the site was also known as Clinton Hall and also housed the library; it had previously been the Astor Place Opera House, site of the infamous 1849 riots.

Note the terra cotta beaver, symbol of station namesake John Jacob Astor and his fur-based fortune.
