Summary
[edit]DescriptionAster subulatus plant1 (11972133044).jpg | Introduced, warm-season, annual or short-lived perennial herb. Stems are erect, wiry and to 1.5 m tall. Leaves are stem clasping, linear to narrow lanceolate, with entire margins. Flowerheads are sparse open panicles, with numerous small heads (2-4 mm diameter) that have white, pink or purple ray flowers. Flowering is mostly in summer and autumn. A native of North America, it is a weed in low, damp, poorly drained and saline areas, such as the edge of swamps, in drains and on clayey or silty flats. A nuisance weed of pastures, which produces small quantities of leaf and is of little value to grazing stock. Leaves and small stems are eaten to a minor extent in late summer and autumn if little else is available, but ignored in winter. Occasionally becomes abundant on damp or wet soil where ground cover is reduced, but it usually occurs as isolated plants or in small patches. Very tolerant of grazing, becoming prostrate and leafy under close grazing. Control is rarely warranted. |
