A transformação do Convento dos Franciscanos em Asilo dos Inválidos da Pátria (AIP) ocorreu em 1867 e teve a finalidade de acolher os militares, fossem oficiais ou praças, da Marinha e do Exército Brasileiro que tivessem se tornado inválidos em decorrência dos combates travados durante a Campanha da Tríplice Aliança (1864- 1870).
