Summary
[edit]DescriptionAsiana Airlines and KLM - Flickr - skinnylawyer.jpg |
In the early days of Incheon Airport, KLM had Asiana handle ground services, and used one of the Asiana gates on the east side of the terminal. Korean Air used central portions of the terminal while most foreign airlines were toward the west. This arrangement changed in 2008 with the opening of a new satellite terminal; all foreign airlines, including KLM, relocated to the satellite. Also co-location by alliance took place; for both main and satellite terminals, eastern portions were reassigned to SkyTeam (including Korean Air), and western portions to Star Alliance (including Asiana). By then, KLM was also a SkyTeam member, not to mention becoming part of SkyTeam founder Air France. The Asiana aircraft is about to operate Flight 541 to Frankfurt. HL7415 was eventually converted to a dedicated freighter in 2008. The KLM aircraft has the markings of KLM Asia, the now-defunct subsidiary in charge of KLM's Taiwan services to duck the mainland Chinese ban on airlines flying to Taiwan. KLM's Seoul service did quite well around this time; in 2002, South Korea not only co-hosted the FIFA World Cup, but its national soccer squad did exceedingly well, and much of the credit was given to the head coach, Dutchman Guus Hiddink. Thanks to Hiddink, South Koreans started paying far more attention to the Netherlands, and started visiting the Netherlands in far greater numbers than before. And no South Korean airline had passenger service to Amsterdam at the time, giving KLM a monopoly on the route. HL7415, Boeing 747-400M (Asiana) PH-BFD "City of Dubai," Boeing 747-400M (KLM Asia) |
