Description |
English: Japanese print featuring the physician J.L.C. Pompe van Meerdervoort Esq., who symbolized Western medicine. The other figures represent Chinese and Daoistic medical science, which had been introduced into Japan much earlier. The Dutch naval doctor Pompe van Meerdervoort arrived in Japan in 1857 to teach some major medical subjects. Within a very short time, he succeeded in setting up the first full Western medical training college. In 1861, the first Western hospital was opened in Nagasaki, where Pompe van Meerdervoort played an important role. |
