Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Ashieburn Quarry One of the waste mounds surrounding Ashieburn Quarry (note the older spelling of today’s Ashaw Burn) gives an overview of the railway approach to the site. The branch siding from Baird’s Muirkirk to Glenbuck line comes up through the trees on the left, crosses a farm track (marked by the stone wall) and curves through a right-angle past some ruined limekilns and out of the picture on the left. The level upper siding from a reversing neck, probably provided to allow coal brought by rail to be tipped into the top of the kilns, comes in alongside and heads diagonally into centre right of the picture. Short barrow runs from the siding to the tops of the kilns can be seen, the kilns being below the clump of trees in the centre of the picture. The opencast site that destroyed Glenbuck village is in the background; the nearer parts have already been restored, though old railway alignments and all other above-ground structures have been lost for ever.
