Summary
[edit]DescriptionAshford in the Water - Sheepwash Bridge - geograph.org.uk - 754324.jpg |
English: Ashford in the Water - Sheepwash Bridge The River Wye is seen passing under this mediaeval packhorse bridge near the site of the original ford. Until recent times sheep were brought to be washed in the river before being sheared and were penned in the adjoining stone enclosures. The ewes with halters round their necks were pushed into the river, ducked and made to swim downstream to rejoin their lambs on the bank. The Church of the Holy Trinity can be seen in the distance. |
