DescriptionAsh Creek meteorite.jpg | The Ask Creek fall took place on Sunday, February 15, 2009 in McLennan County, Texas. The event was recorded by a news cameraman who happened to be filming a marathon in Austin when the fireball streaked through the sky. The video made national news and was first speculated to be falling satellite debris. In addition to the witnessed fireball there were reports of sonic booms and a smoke trail. Using doppler weather data and eyewitness accounts it was determined that the impact was more than 100 miles north of where the cameraman recorded the fireball! Numerous meteorites weighing under 300 grams were ultimately found. In addition to the smaller pieces, three large masses were recovered weighing 1.7 kgs, 1.673 kgs and 1.5 kgs. The main mass weighing 1.7 kgs was found by L.B. Etter on a farm in Menlow. Don Stimpson of the Kansas Meteorite Museum acquired the main mass from which this end cut specimen was taken. Ash Creek is an ordinary chondrite (L6) breccia, S3, W0. This is one of my most prized meteorites. | ||
