Description
English: Seated ascetic or deified king. India (Kaushambi, Uttar Pradesh). Brass, ca. 3rd. century. Metropolitan Museum of Art. This are and enigmatic sculpture is difficult to identify because he has the hairstyle and jewelry of a king or Agni, but holds the flask of a Brahman ascetic and seats with a strap across his knees like a yogi. This image can be related to the sculptures fond at the site of Kaushambi. His necklace can be directly compared to known Roman examples.
