El 25 de agosto de 1947 se inaugura el Monumento al Gral. José G. Artigas, obra del escultor Juan Luis Blanes en la plaza que lleva su nombre, limitada por las calles 19 de Abril, Ansina, Lavalleja y 18 de Mayo. Su base fue construida con una sola pieza de granito rosado extraída de una cantera cercana a la ciudad de Durazno
