Directly he came toLondon he began quite perceptibly to feel theinfluence of the stylists in painting, and under thisinfluence he became conscious that he possesseddecorative instincts which as yet he had hardlyattempted to develop. So upon his robustactuality he grafted in a very individual wayrefinements and subtleties of expression whichincreased the delicacy and charm of his workwithout diminishing its power. He gave moreattention to the adjustment of the details of hisdesign and to the working out of a consistentscheme of pictorial arrangement, and he learnedmore surely the value of intelligent suggestionin his transcription of natures facts. He added,in fact, to his art just that touch of restraint andjust those qualities oforderly
