English: photo (by meRodolph (talk) 00:09, 26 May 2014 (UTC)) of photo of Arthur Devis (1712-1787), 44 x 40 inch, oil painting, The Love Song or The Duet, 1749, of members of Challoner, Aynscombe, Smith, Bisse, or associated family. Thomas-Chaloner Bisse-Challoner hung this on the stairs at Portnall Park, Virginia Water.
  • Note this painting has a most remarkable 1740s frame.

Arthur Devis, 44 x 40 inch, oil on canvas painting, The Love Song or The Duet, 1749, of members of Challoner, Aynscombe, Smith, Bisse, or associated family, now in Victoria and Albert Museum, Kensington, London.

Provenance:
  • By descent to Col. Thomas-Chaloner Bisse-Challoner, of Portnall Park, from either his mother, Mrs Bisse (d.1816); or his great-aunt Lydia Challoner (d.1803); or his aunt Mrs Barnard (d.1842); or his uncle William Townsend (d.1823); or one of his Aynscombe cousins (d.1799/1828/1841/1849), or perhaps from one of the other descendants or associates by marriage of Robert Smith.
  • Thence to Challoner's brother-in-law, Rev. Henry Jerome de Salis, then to his eldest son Rodolph, to his brother Cecil, who sold it at Christie's King Street, 11 March 1932, lot 97, £2,415 TO ?;
