Text Appearing Before Image:
t of a people reflected inthe architecture of their native land may be suggested by recalling thesituation of Athens and of Rome, with their people free-spirited, imag-inative, in touch with the lofty mountains, and with the Mediterraneanso that from their very history and from the land they sprang, theydrew those inspiring conceptions, those prodigious works of architec-ture, those exquisite sculptures which have been patterned by the worldfor more than two thousand years. As we of California increase inartistic appreciation, in artistic vigor, in sentiment, and in the love ofbeauty, so, too, from this civilization on the shores of the Pacific Oceanthere will arise architectural standards that will be regarded by theworld for all time, and will serve to enlighten and uplift the generationsto come. As we grow in daring, and with due regard to the lessons ofthe past are enabled to express our own ideals, so will America morenearly approach the desired renaissance. CALIFORNIAN SCULPTORS
