The border composed of highly ornamentalised fish, No.85, would look effective in inlay, and should present nospecial difficulty in carrying out. In using animal formsfor such work nature must be very much simplified—merelythe generalised shape taken, no reference being made toany one fish. In the next design, No. 86, the animal formsare treated as ornaments, and are so arranged as to occupythe spaces. Beginners must fight against the tendency ofbeing too natural in their efforts to invent their ownpatterns. Think of all objects as shapes. If it be a bird,for instance, dont think of feathers and colour, but of thesimple facts of wings, head and beak, tail and feet, andforget all else. You mightstrive for a harmony in yellows and browns, getting thenecessary relief by opposing a light colour against a darkerone. Stained woods can be purchased of veneer mer-chants, and if desirable a great variety of colour can beobtained in this way, but simple harmonies with the useof only a few woods are to be preferred to a more extendedpalette. No. 88 would do for a border at the edge of a roundtable. A distinct feature is made of the entwining stalks.A harmony in reds and warm browns would be suitable asregards colouring, taking autumn foliage as a guide.
