o not be afraidof lumps of black, that is, those portions which are burntaway, for they are very effective, and help to bring out theshape of the design. Such objects as the fine old seven-teenth-century vessels and heraldry would make capitalsubjects for panels, and though Mr. Brewer executed thiswork in oils, I have put two of his designs in this chapterbecause they seem to be more suggestive of poker workthan anything I could do myself. Materials for suchpanels can be found in old engravings and also in modelsin museums, while heraldry is frequently met with andis full of decorative opportunities, the scroll-like foliagelending itself to poker treatment. Were anyone carryingout such designs as 166 or 167, it would be desirable toleave out the finer pen-work indicating shading, and alsosome of the details of the ships. The white line, too, leftaround some of the forms should be omitted, as it tends toconfuse the design, which is quite full enough withoutadding to it. POKER WORK. 229

Many valuable suggestions for elaborate poker workcould, I think, be obtained from a study of some ofAlbert Durers engravings; such an one, for instance, as 230 ART CRAFTS FOR AMATEURS. the heraldic device with the cock crowing. Photographicreproductions of most of his work can now be obtained. On light wood finer work can be attempted, and I haveseen some poker-work panels which were very elaborateand none the less effective. Cupids carrying festoons offlowers were the leading motifs > and colour was introducedmore as a stain than as pigment; for on white wood water-colours can be used as a stain. Colour can certainly beintroduced with considerable effect in combination withpoker work, and some interesting experiments might bemade by rubbing colour into some of the burnt lines, andthen take the surplus off with a rag, in this way gettingaccidental effects which are often far before any that are■designedly done. Such a design as No. 168, though drawn originally asa tail-piece, is
