It is nevertheless true that Leslie is one of thepainteis who owe a great deal to the engravers; his manner of painting, though learned andcompetent, was not agreeable, and his eye for color was very defective, so that when we havebeen delighted, as every one must be, in looking at the engravings of his pictures, with hisdesign, with his composition, his inimitable skill in telling his story, his refinement, and hissubtle humor, we receive almost a shock in coming upon the pictures themselves.
