Description

In the photo one of the then large number of men from Mozambique, Angola and Cuba who had come to study/work in the DDR. After 1990 many ended up in hostels before deportation. Turning right towards Rudolstadt a Romanian Dacia 1300 car, based on the Renault 16. I am not sure what the covered pick up truck is. This Flickr photo by @Realbilly in 2007 shows a row of portholes above the art deco inspired lettering for STADTHALLE.

The Art Deco inspired modernist Stadthalle was built between October 1930 and May 1931, opened on 17 May 1931. It cost over 177,000 Reichsmarks, originally for sports and gymnastics. It also housed a large 3-day agricultural exhibition in 1955 and subsequently concerts by the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra. Pop groups like Puhdys and Mungo Jerry played here. between August 1999 and May 2002 the Stadthalle was completely refurnished (probably when the porthole windows were created) and reopened on 6 June 2002.
