. The pupilmust bear in mind, when he is drawing this marginal line that, after the con-structive lines are erased, the space between the units will be twice the width of themargin allowed around each unit in the constructive plan. The constructive plan may be made with ruled lines, but the inner marginalline should be made freehand and very faint. Good results may be ol)tained when the above constructive plans are employedeither with units derived from flower forms or with units that are geometric incharacter, provided that care is taken to keep the margins in all the spaces uniformand in good proportion to the size of the unit. Arrangements (a) and (h), given in Form II. Senior Grade text, to develop thejudgment of the pupil with regard to a proper balance between pattern and back-ground, could be adapted to surface patterns repeated in the above ways and usedin this class for the same purpose. ^(O) OOP O; 179 180 ART TILE PATTERNS The teacher who follows the subject oi Design through all the Forms cannotfail to notice the increasing attention that is paid to the unit in itself and in itsrelation to the background. The tile pattern affords an opportunity to concentratethe attention of the class on the unit itself and leads up to the fuller considerationof single units given in Form 111, Senior Grade. The tile pattern would makean ideal problem, if it could be worked out in clay and the best tiles glazed andfired to take their jjlaco in actual service as tea-pot stands. The making of singleunits of this type need not be discarded, however, if under present conditions theuse of clay in this way is impossible, as there are many useful articles for which apattern of this kind is eminently suitable. Two of these are given among thepro))lems in Applied Design for tliis Grade.
