[edit]DescriptionArriva London Routemaster bus RM6 (VLT 6), Brixton Hill tram shed, route 159, 9 December 2005.jpg |
English: Arriva London special purposes fleet Routemaster bus RM6 (reg. VLT 6), parked up in the former tramshed on Brixton Hill (the A23) in south London. It has just operated London Buses route 159 on the last day of non-heritage Routemaster operation in London. As part of the special fleet, gold RM6 along with red RM5 were chosen to operate as duplicates of the official last Routemaster journey on the day, to be provided by another of the special fleet, red RM2217. This last service was a run from Marble Arch to Streatham Hill, Telford Avenue, a short working of route 159 terminating at the last stop before Arriva's main Brixton bus garage (code BN) on Streatham Hill (also on the A23, about a mile south of Brixton proper), rather than the usual terminus of Streatham Station (further south still). With RM5 and then RM6 leaving a few minutes ahead of it, RM2217 was due to leave at 12.10. With the trio having arrived at the terminus around 2pm, after initially parking up in the Brixton garage they were then moved to the tram shed here a short time later, to be posed together (see the wider shot for all three) for some more media coverage and speeches. The shed normally acts as a satellite parking area for the main Brixton garage, and is located a short distance north from it up the A23 (Streatham Hill becomes Brixton Hill between the two). Opened in 1923 as Brixton Hill Depot, it still retains the tram lines in the floor, despite having been sold and used for non-bus purposes before being bought back for transport use, reopening in 2003. |
