The priests took their places in front of the judge, andthe clerk proceeded to read In a loud voice a complaint ofsacrilege against Phileas Fogg and his servant, who wereaccused of having violated a place held consecrated by theBrahmin relio;ion. You hear the charge ? asked the judge. Yes, sir, replied Mr. Fogg, consulting his watch, andI admit it. You admit it.? I admit it, and I wish to hear these priests admit, intheir turn, what they were going to do at the pagoda ofPillaji. The priests looked at each other; they did not seem tounderstand what was said. Yes, cried Passepartout, warmly; at the pagoda ofPillaji, where they were on the point of burning theirvictim. The judge stared with astonishment, and the priests werestupefied. What victim.? said Judge Obadlah. Burn whom.?In Bombay itself.?

Whereupon he placed a pair of shoes on his desk. My shoes ! cried Passepartout, in his surprise permit-ting this imprudent exclamation to escape him. The confusion of master and man, who had quite for-gotten the affair at Bombay, for wdiich they were nowdetained at Calcutta, may be imagined. Fix, the detective, had foreseen the advantage whichPassepartouts escapade gave him, and, delaying his de-parture for twelve hours, had consulted the priests ofMalebar Hill. Knowing that the English authorities dealtvery severely with this kind of misdemeanour, he promisedthem a goodly sum in damages, and sent them forwardto Calcutta by the next train.
