Description

Arms of w:Robert Willoughby, 1st Baron Willoughby de Broke (d.1502), as seen sculpted in alabaster on his tomb at Callington Church, Cornwall, and on wooden bench end in Bere Ferrers Church, Devon. One of six similar Escutcheons of Robert Willoughby, some shown circumscribed by the Garter, on his tomb at Callington, quarterly of 4:

  • 1: Quarterly of 4, with a crescent for difference on the fess-point:
    • 1&4: Sable, a cross engrailed or (Ufford);
    • 2&3: Gules, a cross moline argent (Beke);
  • 2: Azure, a cross flory or (Paveley of Broke, Wiltshire);
  • 3: Gules, four fusils in fess argent each charged with an escallop sable (Cheyne of Broke, Wiltshire);
  • 4: Or, a chevron gules a bordure engrailed sable (Stafford of Hooke and Southwick); Alice Stafford, daughter of Sir Humphrey Stafford (d.1442) of Southwick, Wilts and Hook, Dorset, "With the Silver Hand", married Sir Edmond Cheney, of Broke, Wilts, and by him had two daughters, Elizabeth Cheney and Anne Cheney, the latter of whom was the mother of Robert Willoughby
