Description

Arms of Sir Austin Palgrave (1567-1639) (aged 72), Saint Peter's Church, North Barningham, Norfolk. He married Elizabeth Willoughby (1580-1633) (aged 53), a daughter of Sir John Willoughby of Risley, Derbyshire, by whom he had 9 sons and 5 daughters. Detail from top of his monument. Monument by the North Wall of the North Aisle, with Busts and Six coloured shields, There are altogether thirty-five shields on this monument, but many of them never were painted.

Inscription

Sir Austin Palgrave, Knight and Bt, and Dame Elizabeth his wife, daughter of Sir John Willoughby of Rysley (sic) in the county of Darb., Kt by whom he had issue nine sonnes and five daughters, and hee at the age of 72 yeares, shee at 53, comended their spirits into the hands of their Redeemer in the several years of or Lord. Hee 1639. She 1633. Sir John Palgrave, Kt and Bt, married 1stly to Elizabeth, one of the daughters of John Jerny of Gunton, Esq., by whom he had issue two sonnes, Austin and John, and one daughter, Elizabeth ; and 2ndly he married one of the daughters of Sir William de Grey of Martin, Kt, by whom he had, issue two sons William and Clement, and one daughter Elizabeth, and 2ndly he married one of the daughters of Sir William de Grey of Martin, Kt, by whom he had, issue two sons William and Clement, and one daughter, Ursula. Henry Palgrave, servant to the Queen. Clement Palgrave, Esq., Austin Palgrave, William Palgrave Nathaniel Palgrave, Philip Palgraye, yet ummarried, Willoughby Palgraye, and Richard Palgrave defunct. Mary Palgraye, 1st married to Thomas ye second son of Sir Thomas Playters, and after to Thomas Well, Esq, Urith Palgrave married to William Barsham, Gent, and after to Samuel Smith, Esq, Frances Palgrave, yet unmarried, the other Frances and Ann defunct without mar."

  • John Palgrave of Palgrave, Norfolk, married Sibell Hethersett (d.1445), daughter and heiress of William Hethersett of Hethersett Woodhall, Norfolk
    • John Palgrave (d.1467), son, married Anne Sturmer/Turner, daughter and heiress of Henry Sturmer of Norwich, Sheriff of Norwich in 1441, by his wife Katherine Hanningfield, a daughter of William Hanningfield. In 1441 Henry Sturmer was named as one of the defendants in the plea of the Prior of Norwich against the mayor, sheriffs and alderman of that city. On 20 June 16 Henry VI (1438) he was named as one of the citizens of Norwich who had been falsely accused of treason before Sir John Fortescue. Sir John Fastolf, in a letter to Thomas Howys, parson of Castle Coumbe on 11 Nov. 1450, mentions "my cousin Henry Sturmer's wife". The Sturmers had long been prominent burgesses of Norwich. In 3 Edward I (1274/5) William Sturmer was a warden of Norwich. In 1348 William Sturmer was bailiff and in 1352 Edmund Sturmer held the same office and was MP for Norwich in 1354.           • Clement Palgrave (d.1583), 2nd son and heir, of North Barningham, married Margery Rede, a daughter of William Rede of Beccles, Suffolk.
