Description
English: Arms of Richard Ferris (1582–1649), detail from his monument in St Peter's Church, Barnstaple, Devon. He was a wealthy merchant from Barnstaple who served as a Member of Parliament for Barnstaple in 1640 and served twice as Mayor of Barnstaple in 1632 and 1646. He was a member of the Spanish Company and founded the Barnstaple Grammar School, otherwise known as the "Blue School". Arms: Canting arms of Ferris (and of Ferrers of Bere Ferrers, Churston Ferrers, Fenyton, etc) all in Devon: Or, on a bend sable three horse-shoes argent (Usually shown for Ferrers with tinctures transposed as: Argent, on a bend sable three horse-shoes or) impaling in chief Gules, a bend vairy between six escallops argent (Beaple) , as shown on monument to Richard Beaple (1564-1643), thrice Mayor of Barnstaple, in St Peter's Church, and in base: Sable/Azure, a stag's face cabossed or (unknown family), for his two successive wives.
