Summary

[edit]
Description

Coat of arms of w:Michael de la Pole, 2nd Earl of Suffolk (1367-1415), of Wingfield Castle in Suffolk (or of his son w:William de la Pole, 1st Duke of Suffolk (1396-1450), KG), detail from a misericord, circa 1480, on the south side of the chancel of East Harling Church, Norfolk. He was the eldest son of Michael de la Pole, 1st Earl of Suffolk by his wife Katherine Wingfield, only child and sole heiress of Sir John Wingfield of Wingfield in Suffolk. One of 4 matching heraldic misericords in the church. One of the two misericords on the northern side shows the arms of Sir Robert Wingfield (d.1480), the second husband of Anne Harling (c.1426-1498), heiress of East Harling, the only child and sole heiress of Sir Robert Harling (d.1435) lord of the manor of East Harling, by his wife Jane Gonville, the daughter and heiress of John Gonville by his wife Elizabeth Jernegan. The stained glass effigy of Sir Robert Wingfield survives in the East Window of East Harling Church, re-glazed and enlarged at the expense of Anne Harling. Sir Robert Wingfield (d.1480) was a cousin of the de la Poles, being from the family of Wingfield of Letheringham in Suffolk, a junior branch of Wingfield of Wingfield, descended from Sir Thomas Wingfield (husband of Margaret Bovile, heiress of Letheringham) the 2nd son of Sir John Wingfield of Wingfield, whose eventual heir was his grand-daughter Katherine Wingfield (daughter of his eldest son), wife of Michael de la Pole, 1st Earl of Suffolk.

Heraldry

3 shields, left to right:

  • Hanging from a guige strap: Argent, on a bend gules three wings conjoined in lure of the field (Wingfield)
  • Azure, a fess between three leopard's faces or (de la Pole) quartering Wingfield;
  • Hanging from a guige strap: Argent, a unicorn salient sable armed and unguled or (Herling) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.457, "Harling of Suffolk", variants), as seen sculpted (without tinctures) on monument of Sir Robert Herling (d.1435) in East Harling Church. This shield does not appear original, and has been affixed to the misericord, not carved from it, as is indicated by the contrary wood grain.
