Summary

[edit]
Description
English: On the West Virginia side of the Potomac River, about 1.4 miles upriver from The Point in Harpers Ferry, where the Potomac meets the Shenandoah River, are the ruins of a headrace, where water from the river was diverted for some other use. The ruins lie just downriver from the remains of Dam No. 3 – a rubble dam originally called the Armory Potomac Dam – which was built to supply water to the federal armory in Harpers Ferry, and which also fed the Potowmack Company's House Falls Bypass Canal on the Maryland side of the river. (Later, it also provided water for the C&O Canal). Google Maps identifies these ruins as "Potomac Canal Headrace", but a more appropriate name would be "Armory Canal Headrace", considering that parts of the Armory Canal still exist and form the basis for the Armory Canal Trail along Potomac Street.
