c/n 102 Built 1963 The Sisu competition glider was originally designed to be homebuilt, but the prototype proved to be very successful and it was put in to production instead. The type won the 1962, 1965 and 1967 U.S. National Soaring Championships and set several records, including the national speed record for gliders. This is the first of the ten production aircraft. On 31st July 1964 owner Alvin H. Parker flew it from Odessa in Texas to Kimball in Nebraska, setting a free distance gliding record of 647miles (1,042km). This was the first glider flight of over 1,000km. The Sisu was donated to the Smithsonian Institute in July 1967 and is seen on display at the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center as part of the National Air and Space Museum. Washington Dulles International Airport, Chantilly, Virginia 7th May 2015 |
