Summary

[edit]
Description

Arlington Row was originally built in 1380 as a monastic wool store. In the seventeenth century it was converted into weavers' cottages. They can be found in the English Cotswold village of Bibury. The artist and craftsman William Morris called Bibury "the most beautiful village in England"

It's a place that's Iconic of old rural England and is much photographed. In summer, in particular, the village is full of visitors from all over the world. Japanese tourists, in particular, flock to the village, and this is largely attributed to Emperor Hirohito having stayed here on his European tour when he was a Prince, during the first half of the 20th Century. He appears to have been very fond of the place.

Since 2010, a picture of Arlington Row has appeared on the inside cover of all newly-issued UK passports. Bibury has also been used as a film location, most notably for Stardust (2007)

The name "Arlington" (including Arlington Cemetery) will be very familiar to those from the USA - and there IS a connection. It's too long to explain here, but if you are interested, see here: <a href="http://letstourengland.com/2012/05/03/the-connection-between-arlington-row-in-bibury-england-and-the-american-arlingtons-including-arlington-cemetery/" rel="noreferrer nofollow">letstourengland.com/2012/05/03/the-connection-between-arl...</a>
