Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Side view of Arlington House, the Robert E. Lee Memorial — at Arlington National Cemetery, in Virginia.
  • View from the north-northeast on the driveway of the Custis-Lee Mansion — Arlington Plantation House.
  • The Custis-Lee Mansion was the first Greek Revival style 'temple-form' residence built in the United States. George Hadfield designed the mansion, who also partially designed the United States Capitol complex. Arlington House was built by George Washington Parke Custis, adopted son/grandson in law of George Washington, in 1803.
  • There are eight Doric columns each in the front, each columns 5 feet (1.5 m) in diameter. Each one is covered in plaster, faux-painted to look like marble.
  • The north wing was constructed in 1802, and shortly thereafter the south wing was completed in 1804. The large center section and portico were not finished until 1817. Hadfield's revised design for the central facade required the rebuilding of the north wing's facade to match it and the south wing.
  • George Washington Parke Custis died in 1857, leaving the Arlington Plantation to his eldest daughter, Mary Custis Lee, the wife of General Robert E. Lee.
