Summary

[edit]
Description The Arista Cotton Mill Complex in Winston-Salem, NC (1880). In 1835, Francis Levan Fries organized the Salem Manufacturing Company. The stockholder of the company met on July 9, 1836, and agreed to build a factory on the west edge of Salem. Fries for a year to study textile manufacturing in New England. After he returned, thirty-six looms were installed in the factory to produce cloth. Fries left the company in 1837 to start his own mill one block east of the Salem Manufacturing Company. Over the next decades, demand for the original company's goods decreased, and few banks would lend them money. In 1854, it was sold to former North Carolina Governor John Motley Morehead, who liquidated the company. It was refitted as Wachovia Flour Mills in 1856. Fries' company interests took a huge hit during the Civil War, when his supplies were destroyed during Stoneman's 1865 Raid and his slaves were liberated. Fries died in 1863, and his sons took over his business interests. They slowly rebuilt the Fries name, eventually constructing the Arista Cotton Mill adjacent to the former Salem Manufacturing Company. It was the first mill in the South to use electric lights. It was originally equipped with 3312 spindles, a number that doubled after the first five years. A 200 horsepower Corliss engine powered the 180 looms. At its peak, the mill provided 150 jobs, 70 for men and 80 for women. The flour mill was absorbed by the Arista Cotton Mill by 1900.
