Summary

[edit]
Description

English: "Arietenpflaster von Ofterdingen" (near Tübingen), in the streambed of the Steinlach, protected as a Naturschutzgebiet. These are Ammonites, an extinct group of marine invertebrate animals in the class Cephalopoda, here found in Early Jurassic ("Arietenkalk-Formation" Lias alpha3, age <200 Ma. The accumulation of Ammonites is a result of natural flows in a flat marine sea. Another, even more impressive accumulation is preserved as a huge stoneplate, "Arietenpflaster von Bodelshausen", in the Paleontological Collection of the University of Tübingen.
